FREE Foreign Film Series

(Sponsored by the Friends of the SOPL!)

Italian Cinema Film Series (Part 4). Showing of

"A Special Day" (1977) Thurs March 30th 7-9pm. Location: 65 Scotland Road, in the community meeting room, lower level.

Italian cinema’s most iconic screen couple, Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni – here cast against glamorous type – deliver the finest and most nuanced performances of their career.

Description: On this special day in 1938, all of fascist Rome has been mustered to a parade for Hitler visiting Mussolini. Loren’s working-class housewife, Antonietta, left alone to her chores, meets the only other person left in their block, Gabriele (Mastroianni), a persecuted homosexual radio announcer. The two, who are poles apart, forge an unexpectedly close friendship that will change their perceptions of love, politics and life itself…

Introduced by Gerard Ansellem with discussion to follow.

The September 2016 Villager of the Month is The Friends of the South Orange Public Library!

As reported in the September/October 2016 Gaslight newsletter, our volunteer group is the most recent Villager of the Month! This is a great honor and it spotlights the hard work many folks have been doing for many years to help out our local library.

The article reveals the close to $10,000 the Friends of the SOPL donates to the library annually, introduces its readers to some of our boards members and all of the various projects the Friends of the library have on-going.

THANK YOU South Orange for this kind acknowledgement!

That BIG GREEN BOX turns books into fund$ for the library!

Wondering about that green "Drop Books Here" box outside the library in the parking lot? The Friends of the SOPL have partnered with Better World Books to earn a percentage of their profits for our library and help spread literacy throughout the world. Read more about it here.

It's NOT a place to return library books but you can donate books you no longer want! It's great way to get rid of those "hard-to-donate" books such as encyclopedias, user's manuals, and textbooks. Our volunteers keep on top of reporting when this box is full, and your donations get picked up in a timely manner. (During our book donation days for our annual Book Sale, we will temporarily pause donations at the green box)

The Book Cage is OPEN! Please call ahead to confirm that a volunteer is manning the store.
